Gimp is an open-source (free!) version of Photoshop, that does most everything Photoshop does. Highly recommended! Gimpshop is another version of Gimp with a more Photoshop-like interface, if you are used to Photoshop.

Grafpup Linux distrib (based off Puppy Linux) geared towards the visual artists. The standard version has a footprint <100 Mb, simple, fast and elegant. Includes Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus, and all the standard software for everyday use. This is a live cd, meaning that 1) run off cd, no need for harddrive install 2) you can't crash or screw up your computer 3) save your settings and files to your cd, usb, even harddrive 4) free- as in do- as- you- please- no- licensing- entanglement and of course $$. I recommend this if you are an artist and/or want to try a friendly version of Linux. I run from the live cd version on my old 9-year old AMD 300 with 256 ram, 30 gig harddrive and it smokes!

NVU is an open-source (free!) what-you-see-is-what-you-get web editor similar to Frontpage and Dreamweaver. This will work well if you are a novice and want to build a website without going to night school.

Wine if you use Linux, and want to run Photoshop (windows based), you will need wine. Note: Works with Photoshop 7, not CS and CS2 yet.
